While physical injuries and ailments like colic are easily recognisable, signs of respiratory disorders can be very subtle, especially in the early stages.
Yet, respiratory disease can have as much or even greater impact on the horse's well-being and performance than many more obvious problems. It is therefore essential to minimise pollutants in order to maintain healthy function, one of the easiest ways to do this is by using a dust free horse bedding.
“Today, the great majority of equine professionals see dust as the greatest threat to a horse's welfare in the stable.”
The horse’s respiratory system is divided into the upper and lower airways. The upper airways consist of the windpipe whilst the lower airway consists of the lungs. The first line of defence against dust and other irritants is prior to the trachea, where large particles are trapped and exhaled. However in a dusty stable environment the lungs can be very easily ‘overloaded’ which in turn decreases the ability of these cells to fight infectious agents such as bacteria. A horse in a dusty environment will therefore be more prone to infection than a horse in a cleaner environment.
“Eco ComfyBed and ComfyBed shavings are an almost completely dust free horse bedding that are extremely quick and easy to muck out.”
Below are a few ways that you can help minimise the amount of dust but by far the easiest way is to choose a dust free horse bedding such as Eco ComfyBed or ComfyBed Shavings.
Drainage
Ensuring proper drainage prevents urine and other liquids from collecting in the stable. Urine contains ammonia, a noxious gas, which can be irritating to the respiratory tract.
Not only is ComfyBed a dust free horse bedding it is also offers very good drainage removing the ammonias urine from the top of the bed and away from your horse.
Feeding
Fungal spores develop in hay because our climate results in it usually being cured in damp, humid conditions. Again, it is pointless having a perfect environment if a horse has its muzzle, and therefore nostrils, buried in hay containing fungal spores.
Groom outside
Grooming can generate a lot of dust and should be done outside where the dust cannot accumulate and be inhaled in by the horse.
Many of our existing customers including top level eventers and racing yards choose ComfyBed and ComfyBed Shavings as they know the benefits a dust free horse bedding can offer especially when performing at the very highest levels
